Austria, Empire. An Augustin Jäger Pioneer Carbine M1849 Sword-Socket Bayonet

(Augustin Jäger M1849 Kammerbüchsen-Bajonette). C. 1849-1854. A fine example of an Augustin Jäger Pioneer carbine M1849 sword-socket bayonet. It is constructed of magnetic metal, with a 108 mm socket that has a 27 mm outer diameter and an inner diameter of 23mm. The 595 mm single-edged blade has a thick, flat spine, with broad fullers on both sides. The blade is 34mm wide at the ricasso, with a gradual taper to a spear point. It has unknown hallmarks located on the shank and spine. A complete example in fine condition with pitting and patina.

Footnote: Austrian M1849 Augustin Jäger pioneer carbines were shorter than the standard issue rifles, and therefore needed the extra reach that these bayonets provided. Due to the heavy weight, they have a very long and sturdy socket, with a very secure locking system, via the mortice and locking ring. The bayonet was designed to be used as either a bayonet or a sword, depending on the situation.
