Description
(Militär Maria Theresien Orden). Instituted on June 18, 1757 by Empress Maria Theresia. (Issued 1757 - 1918). A beautifully made Napoleonic Era knight composed of Gold and enamels, in the form of a white enamelled Geneva cross with slightly waved arm finials, the obverse with a round convex central medallion presenting the Austrian national colours (red-white-red) in enamels, surrounded by a white enamel ring inscribed FORTITUDINI (Fortitude) in Gold capital lettering, the reverse medallion presents a white enamelled field inscribed MTF (Maria Theresa Franciscus) in Gold ornate script, surrounded by a green enamel ring, suspended from a dual-ring suspension from its original triangular ribbon, measuring 29.06mm (w) x 31.80mm (h – inclusive of integral ring), weighs 13.4 grams (including ribbon), white enamels on 9 o’clock obverse arm is lightly scratched, white enamel on reverse arms are scratched, medallion enamels are all intact, minimal marks from contact, overall very fine condition.
Footnote: The Austrian Military Order of Maria Theresa was the highest war decoration awarded by the Habsburg Monarchy and was considered one of the most respected military orders of merit. It was conceptualized around 1749-1750, following the conclusion of the Peace Treaty of Aachen in 1748. The Order was officially founded during the Seven Years’ War (1756-1763), on June 18, 1757. The Knight was conferred upon Officers for extraordinary acts of valour and bravery. From 1757 to 1931, a total of 1,039 Knight’s Crosses were awarded.
