Vatican, Papal State. An Order of St. Gregory, Grand Officer Set by Tanfani & Bertarelli

(Ordine di San Gregorio Magno). Instituted September 1 1831. A Grand Officer set in silver gilt, the neck badge presenting a red enamelled Maltese Cross with ball finials, with the central medallion featuring a blue enamelled field with a super imposed bust of St. Gregory, surrounded in a gilt ring inscribed S GREGORTUS MAGNUS, the reverse features the inscription PRO DEO ET PRINCIPE (For God and Ruler) on a blue enamelled field, with inscription GREGORIUS XVI. P. M. ANNOI., the badge is surmounted by a green enamelled wreath, the reverse of the wreath is plain, measures 58.1mm (w) x 86mm (h – inclusive of surmounting badge), worn on a neck ribbon with elastic straps at each end and a hook and eye catch, small enamel chips in the obverse 9 o’clock arm and a flake on the reverse 12 o’clock arm, faceted ring around the medallion spins, in very fine condition. The Breast Star features an eight-point silver star with clusters of five faceted rays, with a superimposed central red enamelled Maltese cross with ball finials, the central medallion features the bust of St. Gregory in silver gilt in the center, surrounded by the inscription S. GREGORIUS MAGNUS, the reverse presents a single vertical pin, the center is marked TANFANI & BERTARELLI, measures 81.0 mm (w) x 81.7 mm (h), light wear to the gilt, central medallion spins, enamels intact, in overall very fine condition.

Contained a case for the Order of St. Gregory, featuring a red leatherette exterior with impressed details on the obverse lid, the interior lid is a crème coloured silk with makers mark TANFANI AND BERTARELLI mark inside, with crème coloured velvet base with recessed section for neck ribbon and recessed sections for the star and badge, the case measures 257 mm (l) x 125 mm (w) x 36 mm (d), functional clasp and hinge, light wear overall, a quality case in very fine condition.
