Instituted 1899. In silver, rim officially impressed 14587 CPL C. F. BAILEY, IMPL: YEOMANRY with CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, TRANSVAAL clasps, replacement ribbon, lovely patina, very minor wear, extremely fine.

Footnote: Edward Frederick Bailey is on the medal roll for the Queen’s South Africa medal, serving with the Imperial Yeomanry unit.

The Imperial Yeomanry was a volunteer mounted infantry force raised by Britain during the Second Boer War (1899–1902) in response to early setbacks against the Boer commandos. Recruited largely from county yeomanry regiments and civilian volunteers, the force served in South Africa performing reconnaissance, convoy escort, blockhouse defence, and anti-guerrilla operations. Its service proved instrumental in the later stages of the war and demonstrated the value of mounted infantry in modern colonial warfare, leading to the reorganization of Britain's Yeomanry into a more militarily effective reserve force after the conflict.
