Instituted August 1, 1798. A bronze gilt version for Petty Officers, obverse illustrating Peace represented by a woman holding an olive branch outward in her right hand, leaning against a large shield decorated with the portrait of Horatio Nelson on her left, with the inscription "REAR ADMIRAL LORD NELSON OF THE NILE" above, reverse illustrates the British fleet at Abouki with the inscription "ALMIGHTY GOD HAS BLESSED HIS MAJESTY'S ARMS" above and "VICTORY OF THE NILE / AUGUST 1/ 1798." below, engraved in the sky “P. Loucher 1799”, the rim is engraved "A TRIBUTE OF REGARD FROM ALEXr. DAVISON ESQr St. JAMES'S SQUARE", a private suspension post drilled into the medal at 12 o’clock, measures 47.6 mm (w) x 53.2 mm (h), weighs 38.6 grams, very scattered gilt wear, suspension broken, a rare decoration in near very fine condition.
Footnote: Alexander Davison was appointed by Nelson sole prize agent for the captured ships after the battle of the Nile. He had this medal struck and presented to all who took part in the action - in gold to Nelson and his captains, in silver to Lieutenants and Warrant Officers, in gilt metal to Petty Officers, and to seamen and marines in copper.
