Germany, Wehrmacht. A Cholm Shield

(Cholmschild). Constructed of silvered magnetic iron, the obverse consisting of a shield bearing a Heer-style German national eagle clutching a Cross Pattée bearing a mobile swastika, situated above an inscription of “CHOLM 1942”, unmarked, measuring 38 mm (w) x 64 mm (h), demonstrating loss of silver finish throughout the base metal, in addition to the loss of its reverse prongs (resulting in the absence of its wool liner and backer) and replacement by three sets of dual eyelets hand-perforated by the recipient to allow for sew-on attachment, a desirable iron version in recipient-modified and very fine condition.
