Germany, SA. A Model 1933 Service Dagger, SA-Gruppe Pommern, Refurbished Transitional Example by Arthur Evertz

(Sturmabteilung Dienstdolch M33). A Sturmabteilung (SA) Model 1933 Service Dagger, measuring 37 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 22 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains original sharpness to the tip and edges, and with much of its cross grain still visible. Acid-etched onto the obverse of the blade is an inscription of “ALLES FÜR DEUTSCHLAND” (“EVERYTHING FOR GERMANY”) in Fraktur script. The reverse ricasso bears a transitional maker’s mark, consisting of the logo of Arthur Evertz, Solingen, situated above a Reichszeugmeisterei (RZM) logo and maker code “M7/85” for the same, along with a manufacture date of “1938”. The blade sits securely within a nickel-silver upper crossguard which is marked with eight notches, distributed in groups of four at both the top and bottom, with the obverse stamped with a letter “P” indicating issue to SA-Gruppe Pommern (Pomerania). A single piece of lacquered dark brown wood composes the handle grip, and is carved into a curvature for a comfortable grip. Inset into the obverse of the handle is a silvered German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, measuring 25 mm (w) x 15 mm (h). Also inset into the obverse of the pommel is a partially-silvered SA insignia measuring 9 mm in diameter. The dagger culminates with a nickel-silver lower crossguard, similarly marked with eight notches, retaining a rounded pommel nut that maintains the dagger’s structural integrity. Accompanying the dagger is a period scabbard, constructed of a brown painted magnetic metal shaft. Nickel-plated magnetic metal fixtures are secured to both the tip and throat with side rivets. The throat fixture retains a ring for the addition of a hanger, while a functional catch within the throat firmly holds the dagger in place during storage. Issues consistent with age and refurbishment are evident, and include replacement of the blade with a mid-period transitional example (which itself shows faint running marks) on an early hilt, in addition to some denting of the scabbard tip. This period restored example remains in a better than very fine condition.
