Cuba, Republic. Order Julio Antonio Mella

(Orden “Julio A. Mella”) Order “Julio A. Mella”, constructed in six pieces and measuring 44.3 mm by 45.1 mm inclusive of the suspension ring, weighing 45.3 grams, struck in gilt and silvered metal, the obverse featuring a gilt portrait of Julio Antonio Mella within a red-enameled circlet surrounded by a radiating star backed by laurel branches, the reverse displaying the Cuban national coat of arms with the inscription “REPÚBLICA DE CUBA – CONSEJO DE ESTADO”, suspended from its original red ribbon bearing a central green stripe with its matching ribbon bar present, the suspension loop loose from wear and the ribbon displaying slight tarnishing from handling and age, in overall very fine condition.

Footnote: The Order “Julio A. Mella” is awarded by the Cuban State Council in honour of Julio Antonio Mella (1903–1929), the revolutionary student leader and founder of the Cuban Communist Party. Created to recognize outstanding contributions by young people in the fields of education, labour, and revolutionary activity, the order occupies a high place within Cuba’s system of youth distinctions and is bestowed upon individuals whose conduct reflects Mella’s example of political commitment, discipline, and sacrifice.
