Japan, Empire. An Order of the Sacred Crown, Eighth Class in Case, c.1900

(宝冠章, Hōkan-shō) Institution Date: January 3, 1888 by Emperor Meiji. A Japanese Order of the Sacred Crown, VII Class. A silver gilt oval medallion with clusters of three cherry blossoms forming the four points of a star, center obverse presenting a silver gilt ancient Japanese Imperial Crown on an silver background, reverse plain. The medal is accompanied by a bow ribbon, the medal measures at 38mm (w) x 47.0mm (h), with a period bow ribbon, and minor wear to the reverse, in better than very fine condition.

The decoration is in original case of issue with a black lacquer exterior and Japanese characters, with an interior purple silk with recessed medal bed and compartment for the ribbon. The hinge is broken being separated from the base, minor wear, remains in better than fine condition.

Footnote: This Order was established by Emperor Meiji. It is conferred in recognition of notable services. Originally it was awarded to Japanese and foreign women, and occasionally men. Now, it is conferred only upon members of the Imperial Family and foreign ladies of distinction.
