Japan, Empire. An Order of the Rising Sun and Japanese Decorations to Arthur Diosy, 1910

A Private Case containing several Japanese decorations: 

An Order of the Rising Sun, Commander, in silver and enamels, measures 54.5mm (w) x 83.9 mm (h- inclusive of Paulownia flower suspension), exhibiting enamel chips in the suspension and in several corners of the white enamel rays, worn on original neck ribbon, in very fine condition. 

Two unofficial Japanese decorations, one in silver, measuring 24.0 mm (w) x 28.3 mm (h), worn on a white and purple original ribbon with horizontal pinback, dark patina, in very fine condition; one in silver gilt, measuring 24.5 mm (w) x 29.7 mm (h), worn on a red and white ribbon with horizontal pinback, gilt wear, remains in very condition. 

An International Fire Exhibition Badge, in silver gilt and enamels, reverse bears a horizontal pin, impressed 54 and maker marked LEWIS MOUNTSTW, measures 28.3 mm (d), light wear, in very fine condition. 

A 9th Congress of Orientalists 1892 Badge, die stamped, gilded white metal, horizontal pin on the reverse, measures 27.6 mm (d), light wear, tight catch, in very fine condition. 

A collection of eight rosettes with metal buttonhole backings, in multi coloured ribbons and three with enamels, all in very fine condition. 

Accompanied by a letter dated January 1911 to Diosy from the Japanese Legation concerning the award; a small segment of ribbon for the Order of the Sacred Treasure in an envelope; a proof document naming Diosy as a recipient of the III Class, all in very fine condition. 

All items are contained in a large personalized case, featuring a red leatherette exterior with lid marked A DIOSY, the interior features a dark blue velvet medalbed with impressions for each decoration, the lid is creme coloured silk marked SPINK & SON, the case measures 29 cm (w) x 23 cm (h) x 2.8 cm (d), one central clasp in with two hook and eyes at each edge, damage present along the side, clasp does not fully latch, remains in very fine condition. 

Footnote: Arthur Diosy devoted his life to the study and promotion of Japanese culture through the founding and development of Japanese Society. He was born in Paddington on June 6, 1856. He published “The New Far East” in 1904. Diosy succeeded in having a treaty signed between England and Japan in the early 1900s.
