Benin, Republic. A National Order of Benin, Grand Cross Star, c.1990, by Bertrand

Instituted 1960. A large grand cross in bronze gilt and silvered bronze, a red enamelled five point cross with clusters of faceted rays in each quadrant, the obverse medallion features a pebbled surface topped by a five point star, encircled by a ring bearing cron and a banner reading RPB (Republique Populaire du Benin/ People’s Republic of Benin), the reverse features a vertical pin flanked by dual stays, pin marked with Arthus Bertrand maker mark, measures 92 mm (w) x 90.9 mm (h), enamels intact, in extremely fine condition. 

Footnote: This Order was instituted in 1960 as the National Order of Dahomey. Its name was later changed to the National Order of Benin in 1986 to reflect the name of the Republic as it was established in 1975. It is conferred upon individuals in recognition of exceptional service to the nation and its citizens.
