Description
An unusual medal bar with an unusual combination of five medals, awards, and decorations, consisting of:
1. An Order of the Nile, V. Class Knight. (Nishan al-Nil). Instituted in 1915 by Sultan Husain Kamil. A finely made and well preserved example of this order, consisting of a 10-pointed silver gilt star with multi-faceted rays and a white enamelled 5 pointed star, with a raised central inlay with text in arabic executed in blue enamels, suspended from a small matching Royal Crown and swivel ring from its period original ribbon, marked “Lattes” and “.900” for silver content, measuring 43.2 mm (w) x 41.8 mm (l).
2. A Khedive’s Sudan Medal. Instituted in 1897. A circular silver medal, the obverse bears the Arabic cypher of the Khedive, and the Hijri year 1314, the reverse shows an oval shield superimposed over a trophy of flags and arms, suspended from a double-toe straight bar suspender using its period original ribbon, measuring 38.8 mm in diameter.
3. A Queen’s Sudan Medal. Instituted in 1899. A circular silver medal, the obverse depicting the crowned figure of Queen Victoria circumscribed by her name and title in Latin, the reverse inscribed “Sudan” supported by Nile lilies, where a figure of Victory sits holding a laurel wreath and a palm branch with the British and Egyptian flags, suspended from a single-toe straight bar suspender using its period original ribbon, measuring 36.3 mm in diameter.
4. An Order of Academic Palms. Instituted in 1808. Constructed of silver, consisting of a palm stem and a laurel stem with berries in a wreath-formation, on a horizontally-pierced ball and swivel ring for suspension, measuring 27.6 mm (w) x 40.2 mm (l).
5. An Order of St. Alexander, Knight’s Cross. Instituted on December 25th, 1881. Type I. Constructed of silver with red and white enamels, cross in white enamels, obverse centerpiece shows stylized inscription with the name of the order surrounded by a ring with the inscription “СЪ НАМИ БОГЪ”, reverse shows the date “19 ФЕВРАЛЪ 1878” on a white background, on an affixed fleur-de-lis and swivel ring for suspension from its period original ribbon, measuring 38.9 mm (w) x 47.0 mm (l)
All medals, awards, and decorations are suspended from a medal bar via their period original ribbons, the medal bar with a soft core, along with a metal loop on the reverse but missing its horizontal pinback, measuring 176 mm (w) x 58 mm (l), the enamels on the reverse of the Order of St. Alexander previously repaired, in near very fine condition.
