A Tuscan Order of Saint Joseph in Gold by Rothe; Grand Cross of very fine quality Austrian make, by Rothe, Wien, comprising: Cross in GOLD and enamels, unmarked, weighing 44 grams, 74.3mm x 104 mm inclusive of crown suspension, small enamel flaking on 6 o'clock reverse arm extremely fine; Breast Star in die-stamped silver, two-piece construction, unmarked, 86.2 mm x 89 mm, vertical pinback. Both are in extremely fine condition, and come with a full length of original sash. Set also comes with period hardshelled case, with Tuscan crown on lid, maker marked "ROTHE WIEN" on inside lid, recessed medal beds, hinged, dual latch closure, case in fine good condition; extremelyrare set of insignia. Footnote: The order was originally founded in 1514 as an award for military, civil and spiritual merits. It was inactive until revived by Grand Duke Ferdinand III of Tuscany in 1807. The order was issued in three classes and was generally confined to members of the Roman Catholic faith until its abolishment in 1860.
