A Service Summary Report for the 9th SS Artillery Regiment - Schmidt was born January 19th, 1920 in the city of Hamburg, he chose not to identify with a mainstream religion and put himself down as faithful. He was a member of the Hitler Youth from 1935 to 1938. Afterwards he worked as a painter in Hamburg and was unmarried. He volunteered for the Waffen-SS on October 8th, 1940 and began with the rank of Staffelmann. He started his military career with the 7th Battery 9th Regiment of the 6th Waffen-SS Mountain Division “Nord.” He was trained with the 98K Carbine, the type 30 Gasmask, Telephone Communication, the type 10 Field Cannon, and the 1.FH 30 Howitzer. He also received his shots for typhus and small pox. In mid-November of 1940 his division was given the task of securing northern Norway, and in September of 1941 he was fighting in the north for the bridgehead at Liza. In October 1941, he was engaged in the defense of the German position in Kiestinki. Until May of 1942 he was engaged in defensive battles in northern Finland. June 1st, 1942, he received a Wound Badge in Black for a wound suffered to his left arm, a shrapnel wound to the back and to the head, as well as bruising to the left shoulder. He also received the Eastern Front Medal on August 10th, 1942.
