A First War Medal Bar to the Royal Navy - The 1914-15 Star. (BOSN. W.H.PHILLIPS. R.N.) officially impressed; British War and Victory Medals 1914-1918 (BOSN. W.H. PHILLIPS. R.N.) officially impressed; Delhi Durbar Medal 1911 (W.H. PHILLIPS. A.B. No 233556 C..H.M.S. "DEFENCE") privately engraved in large block capitals; Jubilee Medal 1935, unnamed as issued. Court mounted, very fine or better condition. Inter-Services Athletic Championships Medal. (W.H.PHILLIPS BOSN R.N.) Impressed, solid bronze, 38.5mm, good very fine condition. William Henry Phillips was born circa 1889. Ranks: Ordinary Seaman, C1907; Able Seaman,1909 - 1911; Boatswain,17th Sept. 1915;Commissioned Boatswain;17th Sept. 1925; Lieutenant 9th Sept. 1934; Died, 1938. War Service: World War I, 1914 - 1918, in H.M.S. Thunderer, Battleship of the 2nd Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet, in patrols and sweeps in the North Sea and at the Battle of Jutland on 31st May and 1st June 1916. Thunderer formed part of the 2nd Division.In H.M.S. Orion, Battleship from November 1916, also in the 2nd Battle Squadron, Grand Fleet. In H.M.S. Berwick, Cruiser, from October 1918 serving on the North America and West Indies Station. Other Services: In H.M.S. Defence, one of the four cruisers which escorted H.M.S. medina, carrying King George V. and Queen Mary, to India for the Delhi Durbar celebrations in 1911. Ships: H.M.S. Grand Fleet, appointed as Boatswain for Quarter Deck Duties, 8th October 1915. H.M.S. Orion, Battleship, 2nd B.S., Grand Fleet, 27th November. 1916. H.M.S. Berwick, Cruiser, North America & West Indies, appointed for Quarter Deck Duties, 25th Oct. 1918. H.M.S. Caesar, battleship, Egypt, appointed 30th Sept. 1919. Reduced to Care and Maintenance Party, Devonport 1920. H.M.S. Marlborough, Battleship, Mediterranean, 26th Feb. 1921; H.M.S. Impregnable, Flagship C. in Chief Devonport & Training establishment for boys, appointed 17th March. 1924; Pembroke Dockyard, as " Boatswain of the Yard ", 12th Jan 1925. Queen Elizabeth, Battleship, Mediterranean, appointed 20th Apr 1927.Devonport Dockyard, as " Master Rigger ", 4th July 1930; H.M.S. St. Angelo, Malta Base, additional for " Minesweepers in Reserve ", 10th July 1933 - 1935;H.M.S. Drake, Flagship, Commander in Chief Devonport, for Mechanical Training Establishment, 23rd Nov 1936. This medal group is extremely well documented and is accompanied by a well organized file which includes a service history dating Phillips promotions as well as 8 photographs of the ships on which Phillips served throughout his career
