1914 Star (8799 Pte A. WATT. 1/GORD:Highrs), the 5th AUG.-22nd NOV. 1914 clasp included but independent of the Star; British War Medal (8799 PTE. A. WATT. GORDONS.); and Victory Medal (8799 PTE. A. WATT. GORDONS.). Naming is officially impressed. Un-mounted, very light contact, original ribbons, the Star ribbon exhibiting fraying, near extremely fine.
Footnote: Private Alexander Watt, 1st Battalion, Gordon Highlanders was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth Watt of North Street, Glasgow, and the late Alexander Watt; and the husband of Mrs. Elsie Jane Watt of 79 Frithside Street, Fraserburgh. Private Watt entered the French theatre on August 13, 1914. The Gordon Highlanders fought alongside the Royal Scots along the Beaumont Road to Mons in August 1914. Private Alexander Watt was Killed in Action on August 27, 1914, two weeks after arriving in France, at the age of 30 and is commemorated on the La Ferte-sous-Jouarre Memorial, located on the south bank of the river Marne, on the outskirts of the commune of La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, 66 kilometres east of Paris, in the department of Seine-et-Marne, France. Also known as the Memorial to the Missing of the Marne, it commemorates over 3,700 British and Irish soldiers with no known grave, who fell in battle in this area in August, September and early October 1914. The soldiers were part of the British Expeditionary Force and are listed on the memorial by regiment, rank and then alphabetically.
