Description
(旭日章, Kyokujitsu-shō). Institution Date: April 10, 1875 by Emperor Meiji. An order of the Rising Sun First in silver with a red glass centerpiece and a white enamelled star. The star is affixed to an enamelled Paulownia flowers suspension consisting of three groupings of purple flowers, with Kanji on the reverse. The decoration measures at 76mm (w) x 114.8mm (h-to the top of the suspension) and weighs 119.6 grams. The badge demonstrates light wear with two small chips to the suspension, but remains in extremely fine condition. Accompanied by its First Class Breast Star, a multi piece construction breast star with a red glass centerpiece with white enamelled rays. Measuring at 90 mm in diameter, weighing 109.3 grams, with a vertical pinback and dual stays. Light wear, dark patina, in extremely fine condition. They are presented in a black lacquer case detailed with golden florals, with a purple velvet interior including two medal beds for the medal and the breast star, and a storage component below. The case measures at 131.5mm (w)x 244.7mm (l) x 76.4mm (h). Accompanied by a replacement full length silk sash with unattached large rosette, and a boutonniere denoting the first class grand cordon. The set and accoutrements are in extremely fine condition.
Footnote: Order of the Rising sun is the first order officially established by the Japanese government in Meiji restoration. The order was officially established in Meiji 8th year (1875), however, few prototypes of the order was made in 1873 and 1874. Some of those extremely rare prototypes was awarded in later years due to the great demands after Satsuma Rebellion.
