WWI 1st Depot Battalion Sweetheart Pin CEF

Sterling silver, officially engraved (PTE. C.W. MCBRIDE / R.H.L.I. / DIED IN HIS COUNTRY'S SERVICE / 19 AUG. 1942), 14.5 mm x 67 mm, extremely fine. Footnote: Clarence Wilson McBride was born on November 13, 1920, the son of May McBride of Toronto, Ontario. He was a Private (B66613) with the 1st Battalion, Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (his service number acknowledged as B-37609 on the RHLI website), when he was Killed in Action during the Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942, at the age of 21. McBride is buried in Dieppe Canadian War Cemetery, Hautot-sur-Mer, Seine-Maritime, France, Grave Reference: F. 40. He is commemorated on page 95 of the Second World War Book of Remembrance and on the City of Hamilton Dieppe Memorial on the Waterfront Trail, Front Right, Plaque 1.

A Rare 1901 Chiefs Indian Peace Medal for the Assembly of North American Indians - Red bronze, engraver marked "P.W. ELLIS CO", obverse illustrating the left-facing conjoined busts of the Duke and Duchess of York (later, King George V and Queen Mary), inscribed "THEIR ROYAL HIGHNESSES" above, "THE DUKE AND DUCHESS" to their left and "OF CORNWALL AND YORK" to their right, surrounded by an ornately framed open-ended wreath of maple leaves, reverse illustrating the Royal Arms in the centre, inscribed "CALGARY SEP 28th 1901" below and surrounded by the inscription "PRESENTED TO HEAD CHIEFS IN COMMEMORATION OF ASSEMBLY OF INDIAN TRIBES", 65 mm, scattered spotting and streaks, extremely fine. Accompanied by its hardshelled case of issue, maker marked "P.W. ELLIS TORONTO CANADA." on the lid, recessed medal bed, scuffed exterior, case fine.   Footnote: According to the book, "Medals Awarded to North American Indian Chiefs 1714-1922" by Melvill Allan Jamieson, it states: "During the world tour of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York, now their Majesties King George V and Queen Mary, undertaken soon after the accession of King Edward VII, Canada was visited in the autumn of 1901, as in the other parts of the British Empire a gathering of the native tribes was held to offer allegiance to the Royal travelers who were representing the King Emperor. The assembly of North American Indians took place at Calgary, Alberta, on September 28th, 1901, and was attended by some two thousand Indians who had trekked from different parts of Canada." Several Chiefs from six tribes signed a welcome statement that was read to the Royal visitors by a young Indian boy.

Mounted to a suspension with swing bar pinback, as worn by the veteran, original ribbons, very dark patinas on the silver medals, light contact, better than very fine. Accompanied by his CEF For Service at the Front Badge (bronze and enamels, numbered "219771", 23 mm, screwback), four Canadian Legion Medals (Merit Medal: sterling silver, hallmarked, marked "STERLING" and engraved "CAPTAIN E.B. TITUS. ONTARIO PROVINCIAL COMMAND" on the reverse, 28 mm x 29.5 mm, original ribbon with MERITORIOUS SERVICE Clasp, pinback hanger inscribed "FOR MERIT" with sub-hanger inscribed "PROVINCIAL"; Past President Medal (silver and enamels, maker marked "SCULLY LTD MONTREAL" and engraved "E.B. Titus ONTARIO COMMAND 1941" on the reverse, 27.3 mm x 30 mm, original ribbon with ornate pinback hanger inscribed "PAST PRESIDENT" with sub-hanger inscribed "T.V.S."; Past President Medal (silver and enamels, hallmarked, marked "STERLING", maker marked "SCULLY LTD" and engraved "E.B. Titus, Esq." on the reverse, 27.3 mm x 30 mm, original ribbon with ornate pinback hanger inscribed "PAST PRESIDENT" with two sub-hangers inscribed "T.V.S." and "COUNCILLOR"; and 50 Year Medal: two-piece construction, bronze gilt and enamels, engraved "E.B. Titus 1975 Br. 439" on the reverse, 27.5 mm x 33 mm, original ribbon with pinback hanger illustrating a "50" flanked by maple leaves and inscribed "Royal Canadian Legion") and six Canadian Legion Pins (Membership Pin: bronze and enamels, maker marked "W. SCULLY MONTREAL" and numbered "94220" on the reverse, 18.5 mm x 25.2 mm, screwback; Member Pin: bronze and enamels, maker marked "J.R. GAUNT" on the reverse, 11.5 mm x 16 mm, missing screwback; 25 Year Pin: sterling silver and enamels, maker marked "G. LAMOND" on the reverse, 15.3 mm x 21 mm); 50 Year Pin: bronze and enamels, maker marked "C. LAMOND" on the reverse, 13 mm x 20.2 mm, screwback; "L" Pin: silver gilt and enamels, maker marked "BIRKS" on the reverse, 15 mm x 19.5 mm; and Over 70 Club Pin (silvered metal, 19.5 mm, screwback). Footnote: Edmund Bradford Titus was born on April 2, 1898 in Oxford County, Ontario. He signed his Officers' Declaration Paper in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario on December 21, 1915 and was medically cleared for service on May 17, 1916, naming his next-of-kin as his father, F.E. Titus of Gore Bay, Ontario, stating that he was with and Active Militia (97th Regiment of Rifles (Algonquin Rifles)),that he had two years' previous military service with the Cadets, one year with the C.S.C.I. and one and a half years with the 27th Regiment and that his profession was that of Student-at-Law.
