United States. An Army Service Dress Cap for General Officers, Major General Chiles, by Flight Ace
Fabricated from a black felt on the exterior, featuring the classic high peak, the hidden synthetic roll frame giving definition to the shape of the cap. There are dual black-finished metal eyelets for ventilation placed on either side on the overhang. It has a 45 mm wide band in black velvet around its circumference. There is an 56.5 mm (w) x 61 mm (h) United States Army officer's cap eagle insignia in fire gilt bronze on the front, the cap badge bearing the Army Great Seal eagle insignia and is affixed to the cap via a screwback that is secured on the inside of the cap. The panels of the black velvet band on either side are both adorned with a length of nine clusters of oak leaves and acorns in yellow embroidery, the raised midribs of the leaves in fine yellow threading. The stiff visor is finished in black velvet on the upper, with a single arc consisting of two facing branches of oak leaves and acorns in yellow embroidery, the raised midribs of the leaves in fine yellow threading, the edge of the visor trimmed in a strip of black nylon. There is a strap in fine gold-colored embroidery with dual adjustable sliders matching the strap, running across the front between the brass buttons on either side, each of the buttons bearing the Army Great Seal eagle insignia. The underside of the visor is in a blackish-green dimpled synthetic material, the underlying stiff framework on the sidewalls wrapped in a gold-colored nylon. It incorporates a 45 mm wide sweatband in leather, the upper with a smooth cinnamon brown finish, the ends of which are stitched together and finished with a cinnamon brown ribbon at the rear. It is marked in gold-colored ink with the Flight Ace manufacturer's insignia on the left side, with a 71⁄4 size sticker at the left rear. A protective pad in pressed fabric is placed under the sweatband, butting the visor, to protect the wearer's forehead. The dome incorporates a yellow-tinted moisture shield, covering the Flight Ace manufacturer's insignia (Ace Manufacturing Co., Inc. of San Antonio, Texas), the company's Ace with Wings insignia featured prominently. Attached to the dome is a plastic sleeve without an owner's Identification Card, however, a strip of gray plastic affixed to the underside of the visor inscribed "MAJ GEN CHILES" identifies its previous owner. The cap measures 265 mm in width x 275 mm in depth x 140 mm in height and is free of mothing and soiling. It is of very fine quality manufacture, displaying a wonderful texture in the felt and velvet, along with quality workmanship. Near extremely fine.
