St. George (G.C.M.G.), awarded to Brigadier General Sir William Henry Manning: Knights Grand Cross set of insignia comprising sash Badge and the Star: Badge, in silver gilt and enamels, 72x107mm, with full length of fine quality sash ribbon, minor enamel chipping, nearly extremely fine; Star, in silver, center appliqu? in Gold and enamels, unmarked, with gold pin, 87mm, very fine portrait of St. Michael, extremely fine. Set of very fine quality manufacture, contained within fitted "Garrard & Co.", London, case of issue. Footnote: Brigadier General Sir William Henry Manning, King's African Rifles, Late Indian Army and South Wales Borderers, G.C.M.G., K.B.E., C.B. (1863-1932). Educated at Cambridge and Sandhurst; joined the South Wales Borderers 1886; joined the Indian Army 1888, and took part in the second Burma War (wounded), the Samana and Hazara expeditions, and served on the North West Frontier 1891; served in Central Africa and Rhodesia 1893-98; Captain, and Deputy Commissioner and Consul for Central Africa 1897; Major and Commissioner 1898; Lieutenant Colonel 1899; raised and commanded the Central Africa Regiment, and commanded the Somaliland Field Force 1902-04; Colonel 1904; Inspector-General King's African Rifles 1901-07; Acting Governor and Commander-in-Chief Nyasaland Protectorate 1907-08; Commissioner and Commander-in-Chief Somaliland Protectorate 1910; Governor and Commander-in-Chief Nyasaland Protectorate 1910-13; Governor of Jamaica 1913-18; Governor of Ceylon 1918-25.
