Germany, Third Reich. A Civilian Gas Mask with Bag

(Gasmaske). This is an extremely well-preserved Second War period civilian gas mask, constructed of rubber, with transparent golden-yellow eyepieces secured with rubber seals. The obverse features a raised tab that permits exhalation during wear. The reverse features multiple cotton straps with an adjustable aluminum buckle, facilitating a flush fit with the wearer’s face. The opening disk for the filtration apparatus is lined with yellowed cotton. Each eyepiece is marked “A. B. 1940 Onnenseite 16702”, while the interior of the mask is stamped “RL1-38/4, Vertrieb gemäß SS 8, Luftschutzgesetz genehmigt”, along with numbers “080512” and “M00827”. The interior also bears a stamped German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika. The filtration disk has a raised inscription of “RL1-39/86” and “M”. The filter is constructed of aluminum, with a mesh-style array of holes facilitating the inhalation of air, and measures 132 mm in diameter. It is similarly inscribed with “RL1 38/4”, a “5-125”, along with ink stamps of “2811” and “048”. The mask is accompanied by its original bag of issue, constructed of canvas, with an illegible black ink exterior stamp, complete with shoulder strap. In unissued and near mint condition.
