Hesse-Darmstadt, Kingdom. An Order of Philip the Magnanimous, Miniature, c. 1900
Instituted in 1849 by Grand Duke Ludwig II. A white enamel cross pattee, obverse center presenting a superimposed silver portrait of Philip the Magnanimous on a blue enamel field, surrounded by the inscription SI DEUS NOB QUIS CONTRAN, the reverse center presents a superimposed silver rearing lion on a blue enamel field surrounded by a white enamel ring inscribed LUD. II MAGN. DUX. HAS. INST., measures 15.85mm (w) x 17.71mm (h – inclusive of integral suspension ring), weighs 1.9 grams, enamels intact, light wear, very fine condition.
