"(Orden del Libertador). Instituted 1880. Type II. 1922-2010 Issue. An early example, consisting of a twenty-eight rayed cross in silver gilt, rays of alternating length, obverse centre depicting a superposed bust of Simon Bolivar encircled by the inscription SIMON BOLIVAR on an enameled blue board, the reverse featuring an engraved coat of arms of Venezuela, measuring 37.67 mm (w) x 44.77 mm (h - inclusive of integral ball), laterally-pierced ball suspension in bronze, presenting minor toned silver, accompanied by original breast ribbon, fine.
Footnote: The Order of the Liberator was originally founded in Venezuela as a Medal of Distinction in 1854, but it was promoted to an Order on September 14, 1880. It was the highest official award in the country, and it was awarded to civilians and military personnel, both national or foreign, for meritorious services rendered to Venezuela. The Order was derogated in 2010.
