Venezuela, Republic. An Order of the Liberator, I Class Grand Cross, c.1980

(Orden del Libertador). Instituted in 1880. Badge: five-piece construction, in bronze gilt with navy blue enamels, measuring 44 mm (w) x 57 mm (h) inclusive of its laterally-pierced ball suspension, intact enamels, on its original full-length sash incorporating a decorative moiré pattern; and Breast Star: four-piece construction, insignia in bronze gilt with navy blue enamels, mounted to an eight-pointed white metal star base, each star point with five faceted rays, measuring 83.5 mm (w) x 91.5 mm (h), vertical pinback. Extremely fine. Accompanied by its 14 mm (w) x 18.5 mm (h) miniature in bronze gilt with navy blue enamels, rosette affixed to its ribbon with push pin attachment, along with two 9 mm in diameter rosettes, each with a push pin attachment, in their hardshelled case of issue, the lid marked in silver-coloured ink "ORDEN DEL LIBERTADOR" (Order of the Liberator) with the Venezuelan coat-of-arms and in gold-coloured ink "PRIMERA CLASE" (First Class), marked "DISTINTIVOS VENEZOLANOS FABRICANTES" (Distinctive Venezuelan Manufactured) on the inside lid, red felt medal bed, very light soilng on the exterior, case near extremely fine.

 

Footnote: The Order of the Liberator was instituted on September 14, 1880 and awarded for meritorious services to the country and the community. It comes in six grades: Collar, Grand Cordon, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Knight.
