Description
Hardcover, steel blue cloth cover, entitled "They Shall Grow Not Old - A Book of Remembrance", authored by Leslie Andrew Allison, assisted by typist Harry Hayward, with many otters contributing their time and efforts to the project. This is a signed First Edition, named "To James Sutton, ex Roland, Man., King City, Ont." along with the signature of "Les Allison" in blue ink and dated October 7, 1993, personal stamp in blue ink "LES ALLISON / Roland, Man. R0G 1T0", the research for the book having started in 1984, published in 1992 by the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum Inc. of Brandon, Manitoba, printed by Leach Printing Limited of Brandon, Manitoba, ISBN 0-920436-41-2. The book is "Dedicated to all those Canadian airmen and airwomen who served their country during the Second World War, that we may be free." It begins with a Table of Contents, followed by an Introduction, where it states: "This book has been produced as a Memorial to all those Canadians who took part in the war 1939-1945. It contains a short biography of the over 18,000 Canadian airmen, airwomen, and other nationals wearing the uniform of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), who lost their lives between September 3, 1939 and August 12, 1945. The prime purpose of this book is to fill an information gap that exists. Judging by the questions we have been asked and the positive response to this book a large number of the next of kin, relatives and friends do not know what happened to the deceased nor where the body was buried. We believe this book fills that gap. That the reader may get a better appreciation for the circumstances and the activities of the time, various pictures, poems and stories have been placed throughout the book." After the List of Acknowledgements are three messages in the form of reproduced letters from: Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Governor General Ramon John Hnatyshyn, and Archie W. Londry, President of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum. As stated, the book contains over 18,000 Biographies of casualties, entailing 843 pages, stating the full name of the RCAF airman/airwoman who died, their rank, age abd hometown, the circumstances of their death, where it occurred, the date of the accident, the unit they were serving with, the type of aircraft involved and burial information. It closes with three Appendices: Appendix I - RAF Casualties in and near Canada; Appendix II - RAAF Casualties in and near Canada; Appendix III - RNZAF Casualties in and near Canada; Appendix IV - RCAF Prisoners of War. The book contains 904 pages of text, interspersed with various pictures, poems and stories throughout the book, complemented by full colour maps placed on the inside front and back covers entitled "Dated Events Invasion Map of Fortress Europe" (circa 1944), the map on the inside front cover tinted and bearing photos of five war memorials, weighing 2.3 kilograms, measuring 217 mm (w) x 285 mm (h) x 53 mm (d). It exhibits a few marks on the edges of the pages, the contents of the book remaining unaffected. Near extremely fine.
Reference Guide Shipping Policy: An additional shipping charge may be applicable following the time of purchase due to size, weight, and quantity. Please note that books cannot be shipped via Canada Post Flat Tracked method.
