Early in the war, they fought in set-piece engagements such as the Battle of Magersfontein, where they suffered heavy casualties during a failed assault on entrenched Boer positions. As the conflict shifted after 1900, their role changed to patrolling, escorting convoys, guarding railways, and participating in sweeping drives and blockhouse operations designed to contain and defeat mobile Boer commandos. They also took part in broader British efforts to control the countryside, contributing to the gradual exhaustion of Boer resistance until the war ended with the Treaty of Vereeniging in 1902.

https://www.emedals.com/products/united-kingdom-a-south-africa-campaign-group-to-cpl-johnson-the-black-watch-m0665-158
