Initially employed for dispatch riding, reconnaissance, and communications duties, its members used bicycles to carry messages and maintain links between military posts across the colony. As the war evolved into a guerrilla conflict, many members also served in blockhouse defence and line-of-communication protection. The corps provided a rapid and economical means of transport in areas where horses were scarce or unsuitable, making a valuable contribution to British military operations in South Africa.

https://www.emedals.com/products/united-kingdom-a-queens-south-africa-medal-to-pte-bartlett-cape-colony-cycle-corps-m0712-22
