Hanton, 13th Hussars, served throughout many of the principal campaigns of the Second Boer War (1899–1902), earning the Queen's South Africa Medal with the clasps Orange Free State, Transvaal, Tugela Heights, Relief of Ladysmith, and South Africa 1901. The 13th Hussars formed part of General Sir Redvers Buller's Natal Field Force and participated in the operations leading to the Relief of Ladysmith in February 1900 before advancing through the Orange Free State and Transvaal. During the later guerrilla campaign, Hanton was severely wounded between May 15 to May 22 1901, reflecting the increasingly hazardous mounted operations against dispersed Boer commandos.
