He enlisted in September, 1887 at the age of 18. His previous occupation was listed as errand boy. He began serving on the St. Vincent, and proceeded to serve aboard 20 other ships. During the Boer War, Newberry was a chief petty officer on the HMS Gibraltar. The ship served on the Cape of Good Hope and West Africa Station during the Second Boer War, carrying troops and supplies, escorting shipping, and safeguarding British sea communications around southern Africa.
