In South Africa, Royal Engineer companies constructed and repaired railways, bridges, roads, and telegraph lines, operated armoured trains, laid and cleared mines, built blockhouses and defensive works, and maintained vital communications across vast distances. Their efforts ensured the movement of troops and supplies and were particularly crucial during the later guerrilla phase of the war, when Boer commandos frequently sabotaged railways and infrastructure.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDuring the First World War, the Royal Engineers expanded enormously and served on every front, undertaking trench construction, tunnelling, bridge building, road and railway operation, water supply, signalling, camouflage, and battlefield fortifications. They were also responsible for mining operations beneath enemy positions, the development of field communications, and the construction of camps, depots, and logistical infrastructure.
