He was a private in the 3rd (Militia) Battalion, King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI), one of the militia battalions awarded the Queen's Mediterranean Medal for overseas garrison service during the Second Boer War. The battalion served in the Mediterranean, principally at Malta, where it relieved regular army units that were being sent to South Africa. The battalion's duties included garrison service and guarding Boer prisoners of war, thereby freeing regular troops for active operations in the field.
