He attested at Gloucester Depot, Bristol, at the age of 19 years, 10 months, in 1898. He was posted to the 2nd Gloucester Regiment in 1899. Lovell served in South Africa from January 1, 1900 to July 6, 1903. He was discharged by purchase.
