Commanded by Lt.-Col. J. R. Royston, it was quickly formed from local settlers and experienced horsemen to provide a fast-moving mobile force for colonial operations.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe regiment operated as mounted infantry, carrying out reconnaissance, patrols, convoy escort, and pursuit work across Zululand and the Nkandla district.
