Ransom served with the Natal Carbineers during the Second Boer War (1899–1902). The Natal Carbineers were a long-established colonial mounted regiment drawn from settler volunteers in Natal, employed extensively throughout the war in both conventional and guerrilla phases. They took part in early frontier operations in Natal, including actions connected with the defence of the colony during the Boer invasions of 1899–1900, and later served in mounted infantry roles during the advance into the Orange Free State and Transvaal.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eAs part of British colonial forces, the regiment was heavily engaged in reconnaissance, scouting, convoy escort, and the pursuit of Boer commandos, as well as participating in blockhouse and line-of-communication duties during the later “drives” designed to contain and exhaust remaining Boer resistance.
