He served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Scots Fusiliers during the First War as an Acting Corporal. He is on the medal roll for the 1914-15 Star, BWM and Victory Medal.

He was killed in action on September 25, 1915 at Flanders. At this time, battalions of the Royal Scots Fusiliers were serving on the Western Front in northern France, where they took part in the Battle of Loos. This major offensive, launched on 25 September, saw British forces attempt to break through German lines, with Fusilier units involved in attacking enemy trenches, holding captured positions, and enduring intense artillery fire and gas warfare. The fighting was costly and marked one of the most significant British engagements of the year.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0713/9105/2053/files/nGulQTKH6gkep3lkH2bIp6QLSzw5QfnOIaKo9s51.jpg?v=1779392235
https://www.emedals.com/products/united-kingdom-a-first-war-pair-to-a-corporal-j-thomson-royal-fusiliers-kia-at-the-battle-of-loos-1915-m0715-11
