At the outbreak of war in 1914, the regiment rapidly expanded from a small number of regular battalions into many additional units, including Territorial and volunteer battalions raised as part of Kitchener’s Army. These battalions were deployed primarily on the Western Front, where they fought in major engagements such as the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Ypres, enduring the harsh conditions of trench warfare and suffering heavy casualties.
