His service coincided with the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, during which the Dogra Regiment saw active operations against Pakistan, particularly on the Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir fronts. The regiment's distinguished record includes the theatre honour “Punjab – 1965”, reflecting its participation in the hard-fought operations of the war.

The Dogra Regiment was one of the established infantry regiments of the Indian Army and had a long tradition of service dating from the pre-Independence period. Its battalions earned numerous battle honours and decorations during the 20th century, including during the 1947–48 Jammu & Kashmir operations and the 1965 and 1971 Indo-Pakistani conflicts. Jai Karan Ram's medal therefore represents the service of an individual soldier of the Dogra Regiment during an important period in the regiment's post-Independence history.

https://www.emedals.com/products/india-a-five-piece-medal-bar-for-the-1965-india-pakistan-war-to-sepoy-jai-karan-ram-dogma-regiment-m0625-155
