Constructed of gilded silver with enamels, on loop for suspension from its period original ribbon, consisting of a Maltese Cross with white enameled arms, joined through the quadrants by gilded NSDAP-style German national eagles clutching wreathed mobile swastikas on white enameled discs, the obverse overlaid across the three and nine o’clock arms with gilded crossed swords, unmarked, measuring 43.76 mm (w) x 44.18 mm (h), weighing 27.3 grams, accompanied by its original presentation case, constructed of a rigid card stock frame with a faux red leather exterior liner, the lid bearing a gilt NSDAP-style German national eagle clutching a wreathed mobile swastika, the interior with a white satin lid liner and intact hinge cover, the former bearing a gilt inscription of “VERDIENSTKREUZ III. STUFE DES ORDENS VOM DEUTSCHEN ADLER” (indicating pre-1943 issue, thereafter classified as the Deutscher Adlerorden Kreuz V.
