He entered Waffen-SS service on 4 August 1943, initially serving with SS-Panzergrenadier-Ausbildungs-und-Ersatz Bataillon 3 and SS-Panzer-Aufklärungs-Abteilung (among other units rendered illegible by moisture exposure). He was a recipient of the Black Grade Wound Badge (20 July 1944) and the 1939 Iron Cross II Class (25 July 1944).
