A well-preserved and field-used entrenching tool, consisting of square magnetic metal spade head with sharpened edges facilitating use as both a practical tool and melee weapon, affixed with five domed-rivets to a shaft of identical magnetic metal construction, in turn fastened to a lacquered wooden handle which bears a hand-carved letter “N” (or “Z”) on the reverse, the head stamped with a partially-legible mark which includes a date of “16” (1916”), measuring 16 cm (w) x 52 cm (l), demonstrating loss of finish and surface oxidation to the head, with some scratching of the handle, both consistent with field use, in very fine condition, accompanied by a carrier, constructed of multiple panels of brown leather, topped by dual loops for uniform attachment, with additional straps fastening closed with a functional metal buckle to hold the tool in position, stamped with a distributor mark of “J.
