A Heer M42 Stahlhelm (steel helmet), constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel with the exterior displaying a wartime field-applied camouflage paint scheme with a mottle consisting of a dark green green base bearing irregular brown splotches. Three eyelets are distributed around the outer circumference, with one retaining a stud with a pin for the accommodation of the interior fixtures. The crown is flanked on each side by an integral ventilation hole. The edge of the skirt remains uncrimped in classic M42 format. A magnetic metal ring surrounds the interior, fixed in place with the sole remaining rivet and pin, and retains a brown leather liner which culminates in eight fingers, each perforated with five ventilation holes and an additional eyelet formerly accommodating a drawstring. Two magnetic metal loops descend from the sides of the ring for the addition of a chinstrap, which has also been lost to time. Stamped onto the back of the skirt is a partially-legible maker’s code of “HKP68”, indicating manufacture by Sächsische Emaillier- und Stanzwerke A.G., with a shell size of 68, with a heat code of “3518”. The helmet measures approximately 25 cm (w) x 29.5 cm (l) x 15 cm (h). In addition to the missing fixtures, the shell demonstrates scratching and loss of finish which has resulted in some surface oxidation.
