He was employed as a teacher before volunteering for Wehrmacht service on 5 October 1937, entering the Wehrmacht Reserve. He was later transferred to the Heeresverwaltung (Army Administration) and served as a paymaster on both the Western and Eastern Fronts, ending the war with the rank of Oberzahlmeister.
