An interesting Heer M40 Stahlhelm (steel helmet), constructed of a single sheet of magnetic molybdenum steel which retains trace amounts of its original apple-green paint. Three rivets are distributed around the outer circumference of the shell for the accommodation of the liner pins, while the crown is flanked on each side by integral ventilation holes. Directly below the left vent is the visible remnant of reproduction SS decal. The edge of the skirt is crimped, providing a smooth surface around the rim. An aluminum ring surrounds the interior, fixed in place with pins emanating from the shell rivets, and retains a blackened leather liner which culminates in eight fingers, each perforated with five ventilation holes and an additional eyelet through which is looped a drawstring. Aluminum loops descending from the sides of the ring accommodate a reproduction chinstrap, constructed of blackened leather and adjusted with a functional magnetic metal buckle. The reverse of the chinstrap is stamped with a Reichsbetriebsnummer of “0\/0390\/0204”, commonly found on modern examples issued to re-enactors. Stamped onto the side of the shell is a code of “SE62”, indicating manufacture by Sächsische Emaillier- und Stanzwerke, Lauter, with a shell size of “62”. The back of the skirt also bears a partially-legible heat code which appears to read “8885”. The helmet measures approximately 22.5 cm (w) x 27.5 cm (l) x 15 cm (h). In addition to the condition issues already specified, the helmet demonstrates other signs of wear and refurbishment, including some loss of paint resulting in surface oxidation to the shell, repainting of the interior of the shell, and replacement of the liner.
