A well-preserved Heer dress bayonet, measuring 40.5 cm in total length when inserted into the scabbard. It features a 25 cm-long, nickel-plated, magnetic steel blade which retains factory-original sharpening to the tip and lower edge. A wide fuller runs the majority of the top edge of each side of the blade. The reverse ricasso bears a maker’s mark of “ALCOSO, SOLINGEN” for the former firm of Alexander Coppel, circumscribing the company’s classic scale logo. The blade sits securely within a nickel-plated metal alloy hilt with a hooked quillon and pommel, and with an intact blackened leather buffer pad covering the seam. An insertion slot set into the pommel retains a functional push-button spring release, as well as an original green wool insert. Two pieces of staghorn compose the handle grip, and are fastened in place with dual magnetic metal rivets. Accompanying the dagger is its original scabbard, constructed of a black painted magnetic metal shaft. A downward-pointing hook emanates from the side of the shaft for the accommodation of a frog, while a functional catch within the throat firmly holds the bayonet in place during storage. Minor issues consistent with age and wear are evident, and include some running marks to the blade, sporadic fatigue to the hilt’s nickel plating, and minor loss of scabbard paint.
