A Rare Narodna Zaštita Personnel Helmet, Repurposed Luftschutz Example

A rare and extremely well-preserved Narodna zaštita (NZ/National Protection) personnel helmet, repurposed from a German-made Luftschutz “gladiator” helmet. Constructed of three panels of dark field-grey painted magnetic metal, the exterior of the shell retains three of four rivets for the accommodation of the interior fixtures, and is flanked on each side by dual sets of seven ventilation holes. The peak bears a stencil-painted insignia of the NZ executed in black, yellow, and red, measuring 55 mm (w) x 50 mm (h). The edge of the skirt is fully crimped, providing a smooth edge. A pressed card stock ring fully surrounds the interior of the crown, and accommodates a three-piece white oilcloth liners, with all three components culminating in two fingers which are perforated with eyelets for the accommodation of a drawstring which has been lost to time. The ring also retains a two-piece canvas chinstrap which fastens closed with a functional magnetic metal buckle. Stamped onto the back of the skirt is a maker’s code of “RL2-39/42”, indicating manufacture by Gustav Rudolph Stanz-, Preß- und Ziehwerk, Bernsbach/Erzgebirge. The liner also bears a stamped size mark of “54” and handwritten owner or unit attribution. Measuring 26.5 cm (w) x 30.5 cm (l) x 16 cm (h), the helmet demonstrates minor issues consistent with age and wartime use, including minor scratching to the paint and fatigue through the liner (in addition to the absent shell rivet). This scarce example of an untouched civil defence headgear, notably repurposed from the standard issue helmet of its German counterpart, remains in a near extremely fine condition.

Footnote: Narodna zaštita (NZ) was established by the Independent State of Croatia to provide wartime civil defence (similar to its German counterpart, Luftschutz). Tasked with protecting both civilians and infrastructure from wartime dangers, and with membership mandatory for most of the populace, NZ was responsible for preparing civilians for air raids, providing instructions for the use of bomb shelters, enforcing blackouts, securing unexploded ordnance, and firefighting, the latter increasing with the prevalence of Allied bombing of Croatian cities during the middle and latter stages of the war.

https://www.emedals.com/products/croatia-independent-state-a-rare-narodna-zastita-personnel-helmet-repurposed-luftschutz-example-eu24580
