He was a farmer when he enlisted on January 3, 1916 with the 124th Battalion in Toronto. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn August 1916, he was serving with the 205th “Tigers of Hamilton” Battalion, but was later transferred to the 180th Battalion. He sailed from Halifax via the S.S. Olympic on November 14, 1916. While in England, he was a member of the 3rd Reserve Battalion and later the 123rd Battalion. He embarked for France in March 1917, and was struck off strength to the 29th Battalion. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe was awarded the good conduct badge on June 10, 1918. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe was hospitalized at the No. 12 Canadian Field Ambulance for tonsillitis on February 22, 1918.
