He had 3 years of experience with the 34th Regiment, and was actively serving with the 12th Regiment York Rangers when he enlisted on February 11, 1915. He served with the 127th Battalion and was later transferred to the 1st Construction Battalion. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOn March 26, 1917, Charpentier suffered a serious burn of the left cornea, from chalk and gas while working on railroad construction. He was hospitalized in Rouen. This resulted in a near complete loss of vision in the eye.
