He enlisted for the Great War in Windsor, Ontario in January 1916. He arrived in England via the SS Olympic in June of the same year. He was then transferred to the 35th Battalion, then to the 20th Battalion. He was attached to the 4th Canadian Infantry Brigade Trench Mortar Battery in October 1916. Mills was killed on December 30, 1916, by the premature explosion of a stokes gun.
