He was a law student prior to enlisting with the 87th battalion (Canadian Grenadier Guards) in October 1915. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHis unit sailed on April 23, 1916, arriving in France on August 11th. He was appointed to Lance Corporal on October 1, 1916. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eHe was serving at the Somme when he suffered a gunshot wound to the right shoulder and hand, and was admitted to the No. 2. Australian General Hospital on October 24th, 1916. He sailed back to Canada via the Hospital Ship Letitia on May 13, 1917. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eWhile in Ottawa, he was diagnosed with an inflicted shoulder on April 24, 1918. He was discharged as medically unfit.
