He was a coal miner with about 12 months experience with the Detaining Force in Amherst,. Nova Scotia, when he enlisted for the Great War in November 1915 with the 85th battalion. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn June 1917, He was wounded in the left arm, but rejoined the unit roughly one week later. Jones was then wounded by a gunshot wound to the left thigh in July 1917, and was subsequently admitted to the 4th General Hospital. From there, he was moved to the 44th Casualty Clearing Station at the end of October. He became dangerously ill and the leg was amputated. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eJones was invalided to Canada in May 1918.
